Mathew White

PhD
Lecturer in Risk & Health
Mat is a social/environmental psychologist interested in the how people respond to, and interact with, different environments. His early career focused on public responses to natural and man-made environmental risks and hazards. More recently, his focus has shifted to the possible benefits of spending time in and around natural environments. His emerging research suggests that aquatic environments, especially the sea, might be particularly beneficial for various mental processes and well-being. How we balance these benefits with the inherent risks is a key challenge for policy. He leads the Blue Gym research initiative, is a member of Natural England’s Outdoors for All Research Advisory Panel and is the Secretary for the Society for Risk Analysis (Europe).
